Self-employment tax explained
Self-employment tax is the Social Security and Medicare tax paid by people with net earnings from self-employment. This page deliberately separates it from regular federal income tax.
Worked example
If net profit is $57,000, net earnings for SE tax are 92.35% of that profit. The Social Security portion applies up to the annual wage base, while Medicare applies more broadly and Additional Medicare Tax may apply above threshold amounts.
Methodology
The calculator uses net profit times 92.35%, then applies 12.4% Social Security tax up to the wage base, 2.9% Medicare tax and 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax where applicable.
